Douliou Hash Run
November 26, 2016
I thought I had done a lot of random things in Taiwan, but I think this has got to be one of the oddest things I have done.
Anthony invited Amanda and I to join in a hash run that he participates in every now and then. Since it was going to be his third hash he was going to be named. For anyone who doesn’t know a hash run is like a non-competitive social running club. At this particular one once you pay the hash fee then you can drink as much of the beer and other beverages available to you. Some of the people walk behind the hares (who mark the trail ahead of everyone else) and others run. Amanda and I opted for the running.
The hash took place in Dakeng, so we didn’t really get to run any of it until the very end. There were hidden markings and clues along the trail. Miss a marking and risk getting lost or having to make your way back until you find it. The searching part of it all wasn’t exactly my favorite, but the camaraderie as we made our way through the mountain was fun. At the end we could drink more beer, chill out, and meet the other people in the group as they made it to the finish line.
Once everyone made it to the end we had a “meeting”. Introductions were made and hashers who had gone three times got their hash names. It was really interesting watching all of this take place as a first timer. The humor of the bunch was definitely “sailor” humor, but I didn’t mind. Eventually, I had to leave so I drove Amanda and I home.
I think I will go again. It was definitely different than what I am used to doing in Taiwan, but I can’t pass up new experiences.
