Errands and Friends
January 10th, 2015
Payday finally came and I had a lot of errands to run. My CT, Jane, is awesome and volunteered to help me with some of them. We first had lunch at the Pizza Factory in Fengyuan. I had Pesto Pasta. It was pretty good. I have found out the hard way that pesto tastes different in Taiwan. Dessert was delicious though, Creme Brulee, always my favorite.
Next we went to the glasses shop. Jane and I got our eye examinations. Thank goodness Jane helped me because all the questions were in Chinese, and my prescription turned out perfect. This specific glasses shop has you walk around with ugly looking glasses with your prescription in them. Unfortunately, my eye sight has worsened since my last examination. We then started my favorite part, trying on all the new frames. I quickly picked out my favorite pair and after some talking back and forth I was able to decide on a contact lens option. For an eye examination, new glasses, new set of contacts, and contact solution the grand total came to: 3,500NT (115USD). I was pleasantly surprised at the price.
I got my new glasses less than a week later. I am pretty happy with them.
Next we went to take care of my scooter. I received a postcard in the mail from the Taichung Police Department a few weeks before. It was all in Chinese so I was freaking out thinking that I had received a parking ticket. I immediately snapped pictures of the postcard and sent it to Jane. She informed me that I had not received a speeding ticket, but instead I had received a notice to go and get my scooter’s exhaust checked. Jane showed me a shop. At the shop they put what looks like a vacuum hose on the end of your exhaust pipe and measure the carbon dioxide that your scooter gives off. If you pass a smiley face will show up on the computer screen. I passed! I then got a new tag on my scooter showing that I had passed the inspection. The inspection was free, but if I had not gotten it checked before the end of February I would have been fined 2,000NT (60USD).
After I ran all my errands Jane and I departed ways since we both still had things to do that day. I went home to get ready to go to my friends, Laura and Sean’s apartment in Taichung. Before I made it there I stopped by the Food Materials Mall. This store is filled with baking and cooking materials. I was in baking heaven and got overwhelmed quickly by how many different things there were in the store. I didn’t have enough time to walk through the whole store, but I can’t wait to go back again. I ended up buying basic baking materials for a banana bread recipe. I then headed over to Laura and Sean’s. We spent the evening making homemade pizza and watching television that they watched in the UK. It was great to just chill with friends and make good food.
